I emailed them to see if they had a piece in stock, the communication was poor. I was told that it was not available in Europe. Then I followed up x2 to see where it was in stock and was then told it is no longer in production, even though it's still listed on their website and that they cannot access other locations to see what is in stock (disappointing for high end global brand with global customers that they don't have this feature?) Lastly, I asked for the local numbers to two other boutiques outside of Europe and was old they don't have the numbers. Clearly customer service is not a priority them them unless you come though their personal shopping assistant or wish to have customisation of a piece done.

I fell in love with Van Cleef jewelry at the age of 14. Let just say my dream came true due to my shopaholic girlfriend. I had a great experience at the store in Geneva.

I bought an Alhambra watch worth 30k, and the strap broke off after wearing it only a handful of times, and very carefully. When I took it in for repair, I was told the strap wasn't in stock and that I would have to wait 10 days for a new strap to arrive. 10 days later, and no one called, so I called back to find out that the strap had arrived but I hadn't been notified.

When I went in I heard three different sales associates speak to clients in a disrespectful way.

The first was an older gentleman who came in to pick up an invoice. After looking at the document, he told the sales associate that he believed the rate had changed. Instead of acknowledging what he had said and double checking with the colleague that had helped the gentleman the day prior, she quickly brushed him off saying the rates never change, that it could not be a mistake and that it must be that he, the client, doesn't remember well. He chuckled and politely replied that he remembered very well, but she insisted and sent him on his way saying that was the rate and there was no doubt about it. If I was him, I would never return to Van Cleef & Arpels again - there are plenty of other fine jewellery brands to choose from.

The second was a sales associate speaking to two women about a potential sale. The associate told the woman "she could not" choose a piece of a certain size "because she had to" consider the size of her solitaire diamond. Otherwise, "it wouldn't look right". These strongly voiced opinions left no room for the client's personal opinion who may have liked the size she chose and may have even wanted to outplay her solitaire. Since when are associates the "author of the truth". This kind of domineering form of communication is archaic and lacks empathy or understanding.

The third was my own exchange with a sales associate. After the strap was changed, I was able to see from the previous broken strap how it had been connected to the case - by two tiny gold rings millimetres wide. I said no wonder it broke - the contact point between the bracelet and case is held together by only these two tiny gold rings - no solid bar as in other watches. The sales associate assisted that the watch was in fact strong and that it would take a lot of force for the strap to break. When I explained that my strap had broken without hardly any force, she said she couldn't explain why, but insisted that the watch wasn't fragile. I would have preferred that she acknowledge what I say with active listening - like, "I see your point. It's true that these rings are small, I will pass this on headquarters and ask them their opinion and come back to you with an answer, etc.."

Empathy, active listening and putting the customer first are essential in the retail world. I am sad to say that I experienced none of this at VCA.

I love the VCA creations but I will not be going back to this Geneva boutique until the human factor has been greatly improved.

P.S. The kindest person in the store was the security guard who even thought of offering me a bag but was told by the sales associate I didn't need one. Funny enough, I ended up asking for a bag because the receipt didn't fit in my clutch and so the sales person ended up giving me a bag anyway.
