My experience with ECAP was generally good, although not without a few issues.

"plus" points
- Two out of the three "permanent" teachers I had were good - energetic, knowledgeable and sensitive to the students' needs, with good audience management skills.
- The school staff and the program manager were also generally accommodating.
- If you show decent progress in your study you get to do the official German language test (TELC Prüfung) free of charge, which is nice.

"minus" points
- Groups are way too large. At one point we had 14 (!) students in the class. It was said to be due to a large influx of new immigrants from Ukraine and elsewhere, but I have my doubts that it's just that.
- Not all teachers treat foreign students well. Some are rude, others are snobbish and prejudiced, and make disrespectful remarks. Most amazingly, these teachers are not Swiss - they are immigrants from Germany and Austria themselves.

I have, on multiple occasions, by phone and email, asked ECAP to explain themselves regarding the following issues, however they refused to give me an answer, therefore I post them here:

In a German language B2 class, on the seventh day of an intensive course, our teacher Beatrice Montanari, took us to a museum and provided no guidance there, other than telling us to read the captions next to the paintings. (I have testimonies from other students expressing the same intense frustration). Also, on the morning of that day, she instructed us to simply read the museum's website and then present our findings to each other (which she did not correct, although of course we all made many mistakes).

When I decided to stop attending the courses due to this above fact (and to the for-mentioned situation regarding classes going online), I called to discuss that I would pay for the first week of the course (which was actually very reasonable quality in my opinion – see next note below) and was told that someone would get back to me with this information. However, no one contacted me until the last day of the one-month long course (Marion Kussmaul, August 9) and then sent me a bill the following day, for the entire month fee. Therefore even if I had wished, I had no opportunity to attend courses that in the end they forced me to pay.

BE AWARE! The policy of ECAP is such that you can leave in the first week and only pay those days you attend. However, if you stay until even the first day in the second week, they will charge you for the full course. Our teacher conveniently and accordingly provided very high-quality and seemingly-motivated instruction within the first week, and then dropped her performance considerably thereafter.

I feel I have been scammed. I attempted discussions with the director, Roger Nesti, but it was simply impossible.

Previous note:

Unfortunately ECAP finds it is acceptable to force group lessons to be held on Zoom when a teacher is exposed to COVID positive individuals. This is not a requisite given by the CH government (no quarantine necessary), therefore if a teacher is sick, we should have a substitute teacher or have the classes canceled and rescheduled later on. This would never have been an option in pre-pandemic times. Based on this, I do not have the feeling this school cares greatly about the students' learning experience. Not to be recommended.

The management at ECAP is a total shame. I've been there for three months. We've had in person classes up-to thrice a week in small rooms wearing a mask, no official test was required, but the exam day it was not possible to pass the exam without showing a QR code. Joke apart, the "teacher" was checking the QR code looking (understand no app to check QR code validity) at students phone, not even checking with a device. I'd suggest to unemployment insurances to look for a more serious organization to provide german, italian courses to job seekers. Cherry on the cake, the person who's supposed to answer question doesn't reply to emails, and we're there to learn german so it's almost impossible to communicate with their Secretary/HR.

If you have been assigned classes by Rav, be careful as Ecap staff can lie and cancle the course and then inform Rav that you refused to attend classes. They act like as if they want to help you find a class that fits you but all they care about is money. So , if you are from Unemployment and they ( Ecap ) start telling you how they have no class for you during the hours you are available, make sure to report it /inform your rav supervisor as soon as possible. And keep proof of emails they write, do not discuss anything on phone as they lie. You end losing a month's salary all because of lies and by the time you collect proof and send it, its exausting. Oh and they have no respect what so ever for other language schools in Basel!!! They would tell you how there school level is higher than where you were before, so heance advise you to retake the same course that you took at another school, not really minding about what is best the student. I had a really really bad experience with them. I would not go back there.
